The Life Balance Decision

High school students are pulled in a lot of different directions. Academics, athletics, social media, friends, romantic partners, families, work, community service and so much more. Parents, coaches, teachers, counselors and friends are all telling them how to spend their time. But, all too often they are choosing how to spend their time without making a conscious decision.
This lesson plan from the Decision Education Foundation, helps students asses how they are balancing all of the things they have going on and make a conscious decision about how they will spend their time moving forward.
By combining the essential life skill of decision-making with a real-world issue students are invested in, this lesson helps students take their life into their own hands. Students will learn to:
- Recognize how their environment and experiences shape their decisions.
- Evaluate and recognize their values.
- Use facts to help guide them towards better decisions.
- Flex their self-autonomy and own the decisions that will affect their future.
The goal is not to tell students what to think, but to show them how to think more clearly—developing informed beliefs rooted in evidence rather than assumption.
