The Summer Break Decision

This Decision Education Foundation lesson plan combines the essential life skill of decision-making with students’ natural excitement about summer and the timely topic of responsible AI use. Students will use the Decision Chain framework and the ChatGPT Decision Insights VII tool to thoughtfully explore and decide how to spend their summer break. A guided slide deck walks them step-by-step through evaluating ideas, researching new options, and ultimately making a well-reasoned decision that fits their goals and interests.

In addition, students will use ChatGPT Decision Insights VIII to see how AI can support specific parts of the decision-making process—and where its limitations lie. This teaches students not just how to use AI effectively, but how to use it responsibly.

The activity includes a pre-formatted Google spreadsheet where students record their thinking. It’s color-coded for clarity and ease of use, with a completed example provided for reference.

Perfect as an end-of-year project, this lesson helps students apply critical thinking to real-life decisions they care about—just in time for summer.
